How many times have you walked into a barbershop, dreaming of the perfect haircut, only to come out, feeling even more dejected than before you came? Believe me; you’re not alone.
For guys like me that waited up till we entered university before we could get that one haircut we’ve been dreaming for years, coming out the barbershop looking like God-Knows-What was pretty dejecting.
Don’t worry, after reading this, you’ll be in a better position to receiving that haircut that’ll make you exit the barbershop feeling on top of the world. Let’s hop into it!
1. Show Up With Clean Hair.
This is literally supposed to be a no-brainer, right? I mean should want to show up in a barbershop with hair full of dirty, “stanky” hair. But that’s exactly what we do! We don’t even shower and appear looking like we just got out of farm or something.
Mr. Gramelspacher, from the Wall Street Journal, reports, “It’s not fun to service a customer whose hair is dirty, greasy, or oily. Somewhere in pop culture, it become uncool to was your hair. [Say wah?!] That’s just really not true.”
So, next time you want to go to the barbershop, remember to take a shower.
2. Know What You Want.
Please and please, before you sit in the barber’s chair, know exactly the type of haircut you want. A good barber will, and does not have the time for you to make a decision.
If you’re like me, and have problems describing the type of style, bring a visual aid—maybe a close-up of Ebuka (Yeah… Keep dreaming). A picture will make it way easier for the barber to make sure you get the right one.
Oh, and yeah, before I forget, be specific with what you want. Which one is “Make it short, but not too short”? Let’s be guided please.
3. Stay off The Phone.
Texting is annoying; answering a call is unbearable. While on your phone, it’s inevitable that you keep moving your hands and arms. In a line of work where precision is key, being on your phone creates constant movement that hinders the barber from doing his job. Not to mention the possibility of mistakes.
Don’t worry—you won’t die if you don’t use your phone for 30 minutes.
4. Engage.
No barber would like it if you started complaining and dictating after the haircut is finished. In fact, this will easily put you on the blacklist of that barber. So, why not make an effort to communicate during the process. You don’t want a parting or a brow shave, speak up—it’s your hair.
Secondly, a barber is a human being like you. It won’t hurt to have small talk when you visit the barbershop. This is not to say that you make it personal, or over-do it. Just figure out common interests and have fun. They enjoy the conversation.
“My favourite client is something who treats you like a person and not like someone who’s just doing a service for them”, says Ms. Mahoney. Why wouldn’t you want to be a favourite customer if that means you‘d walk out the barbershop with a smile? All it takes is some small talk.
