About a month ago, Twitter was banned in Nigeria, therefore, accessing the platform via VPN became the new normal. Nevertheless, though people have been able to find other means to keep tweeting, being able to use Twitter legally is still very much appealing especially to brands and those that influence brands.
After the ban, which occurred on the 4th, of June 2021, the House of Representatives tasked committees such as, the committees of Communication, Justice, Information and Culture with the duty of investigating the Twitter ban and drafting recommendations that will be discussed in the chamber.
However, on Thursday the 1st of July, after the committees charged with the task of looking into the Twitter ban, gave the reports and recommended that the ban should be lifted since Twitter is a source of livelihood for some Nigerians.
Nevertheless, after a vote was conducted the “nays” had it. The majority of the members of the House of Representatives voted against lifting the suspension. Therefore, Twitter remains suspended in Nigeria.
Reports have it that there are ongoing talks between the federal government and Twitter. However, the federal government has vehemently expressed that they want Twitter to register as a company in Nigeria, and pay tax.
