April 30th, ten years ago was the happiest day of my life. I was getting married to the love of my life. We had met during our internship at the same organization and even though we did not hit it off from the get-go, the universe eventually did its thing and cupid’s arrow finally stuck.

Lying in the middle of our gold four-poster bed, legs sprawled on either side of her body with her hand beneath her head, and her hair carefully tucked in her bright green hair bonnet, I couldn’t stop myself from muttering, “You really are beautiful, my love”. I guess she heard it from La-La land because at that instant she gently stirred.

Two years after we first started talking and I still could not imagine how I had survived all these years without her. Call me a simp or whatever demeaning word you have stuck in your head, it does not matter nor change the way I feel about her. She was the most important person in my life and that was all that mattered.

Walking to the bathroom to pee, I stopped beside the dressing table to pick up a small framed picture of the both of us on our first date, how she was able to still look radiant after a decade should be written in a book and sold in hard currency.

I remember telling my brother I was in love. The look of surprise plastered on his face was beautiful. Growing up, I was this shy kid who couldn’t bring myself to make male friends let alone talk to a female. So, I understood his utter surprise when I broke the news to him.

Coming back from the bathroom, facing two options, either going back to bed and join her or fulfilling the actual reason I woke up this early, to work. I decided on the latter and went straight to my work desk. Rearranging all the files I had to look through for the last time, I quickly plugged in my headsets and set to work.

The thing is I still didn’t know how I was able to make her talk to me let alone fall in love with me. But the truth still remains I am the luckiest man alive. I had taken a vow to always protect and love her, and so help me God I hope never to have a reason to falter.
